How to create a cloze worksheet from a passage

  1. Paste or upload the passage you want students to work with.
  2. Select Build Blocks, then click the exact words you want to replace with blanks.
  3. Keep the word bank on for more support, or remove it when students should retrieve the missing words without choices.
  4. Download the student worksheet and teacher answer key as PDF or DOCX.

Choosing the blanks yourself gives you control over the purpose of the activity. You can target vocabulary, content words, transition words, names, verbs, or other details that matter in the lesson instead of removing words at random.

A cloze passage example with a word bank

Try this short passage: The class planted bean seeds in the garden. Each day, students checked the soil and added water. Paste it above, select Build Blocks, and click seeds, soil, and water.

Student passage: The class planted bean _____ in the garden. Each day, students checked the _____ and added _____.

Word bank: seeds, soil, water. Answer key: seeds; soil; water.

Keep the word bank for vocabulary matching, or turn it off to ask students to supply words from context. Without a bank, more than one answer may make sense: compost could fit the second blank. The generated key preserves your original words, so decide whether to accept other reasonable answers before assigning the worksheet.

For a longer cloze passage, keep enough surrounding text to support each blank. The tool accepts up to 500 words and warns above 400; split a crowded passage into shorter activities. You choose the missing words yourself rather than having every fifth or tenth word removed automatically.

Choose blanks that match the learning goal

  • Vocabulary review: blank the words students are expected to use and understand.
  • Reading comprehension: remove key details that require students to make sense of the surrounding sentence or paragraph.
  • Grammar and syntax: target verbs, pronouns, conjunctions, or transition words when those structures are the focus.
  • Reader's theater follow-up: use a short excerpt or teacher-created summary and blank important character, setting, or plot words after rehearsal.
