How to make a printable word search

  1. Paste your words one per line, as a comma-separated list, or from a numbered or bulleted list.
  2. Choose a difficulty preset and decide whether diagonal or backwards words should be allowed.
  3. Select Generate Word Search, then download the student puzzle and teacher answer key as PDF or DOCX.

The generator is useful when you already have the vocabulary and want a clean activity without rebuilding a worksheet by hand. Regenerate the puzzle if you want a different letter layout while keeping the same word list.

Classroom ideas for vocabulary review

  • Use unit vocabulary as a warm-up before reading or discussion.
  • Turn character names, setting words, or key terms from a story into a quick pre-reading activity.
  • Make an easier version with forward words only, then add diagonals or backwards words for a more demanding version.
  • Send the answer key to yourself while students receive only the puzzle version.

For reader's theater, a word search can preview character names and unfamiliar vocabulary before rehearsal. You can start with free reader's theater resources or browse the full script collection.
