A short, specific clue usually produces a better classroom task than a dictionary-style definition copied out of context. For a reading lesson, clues can ask about characters, setting, key vocabulary, or important ideas students met in the text.

Ways to use a custom crossword in class

Use the same vocabulary across more than one activity instead of treating the crossword as an isolated puzzle. Students might meet the words during reading, review them in the crossword, and then use them in discussion or writing.

• Before reading: preview essential terms that students will need to understand the text.
• After reading: use clues that require students to recall a person, event, concept, or definition.
• Reader's theater rehearsal: build clues around character motives, setting, stage directions, or unfamiliar vocabulary from the script.
• Quick review: regenerate the layout while keeping the same words and clues for another class period.
